Alessandro Del Piero explained how he and Francesco Totti have remained close friends over the years, despite captaining rival teams. The pair were legendary captains of Juventus and Roma respectively, and were often portrayed as fierce rivals on the pitch. Speaking with Sky Sport Italia, Del Piero explained how Totti has always been a close friend of his, and why the rivalry between the pair was more of a media creation:
“In those years, I didn’t experience the rivalry only with Totti, you experienced it every game because in our time there were so many champions around,” said the legendary Juve captain.
“More than rivalry, a complicity was created between us, we knew that we had different responsibilities as captains. We have always fought each other on the pitch, but my rivalry with Totti was always based on respect. Many have tried to put us in a position to clash heads, but in reality we always had a laugh and remained good friends.”
