Stefan De Vrij is experiencing a resurgence in form as he steps up to replace Francesco Acerbi in the Inter Milan defence. The Dutch defender has been delivering high-level performances, and although his contract is set to expire at the end of the season, he remains optimistic about his future with the club. “It’s Inter that has to decide; there is an option for another year. I am very happy here,” he stated.
In a recent interview, De Vrij reflected on his current season compared to the last, saying, “I can’t make a direct comparison, but I invest a lot to stay fit. They say it gets harder after 30, but I feel physically very good.”
Commenting on Inter’s recent 6-0 victory over Lazio, he noted, “We expected an important performance, knowing we were facing a difficult opponent on their turf who plays well and is full of enthusiasm.”
De Vrij also reminisced about his time at Lazio, expressing respect for the club: “I had wonderful years there and great memories. I respect the club, but now I’m focused on doing my best for these colors.” When asked about the reception he might receive from Lazio fans, he accepted it with maturity: “It’s always been like this, and I accept it. I have experience and am focused on what I need to do.”
When discussing rivalries, he acknowledged the significance of derbies: “A derby is very important anywhere. But I always look at the glass half full; I’m positive, and winning brings great satisfaction.”
Looking ahead, De Vrij expressed confidence in Inter’s squad: “We have a roster and a connection that makes us believe we can do well in every competition. The goal is to go all the way; we can beat anyone. Of course, it won’t be easy, but we have that belief. In the meantime, we take it one game at a time.”
Playing at San Siro brings him joy: “Every time I play at San Siro, it’s a beautiful experience in front of our fans. When my family comes from Holland or even players from other teams in the Champions League come, everyone is amazed.” However, he also acknowledged the need for development: “It’s not an easy question: my heart would say San Siro, but a new facility would help grow the club.”
