Inter Milan and the Netherlands national team defender Stefan de Vrij has spoken about his future at the Italian club and their prospects for the season. In an interview with SportMediaset following the Netherlands’ 1-1 draw with Hungary in the Nations League, de Vrij addressed both his national team performance and his situation at Inter.
Reflecting on the match against Hungary, de Vrij said, “It wasn’t easy against Hungary. They closed ranks, we had a lot of possession. We struggled to find spaces in the first half, while in the second half we created more and even with ten men we maintained high confidence, managing to equalize. Now Germany awaits us, and it will be another great match, a great challenge for us.”
When asked about Inter’s upcoming fixtures against Roma, Young Boys, and Juventus, and their Scudetto chances, de Vrij responded cautiously: “We need to think one game at a time, without looking too far ahead. So for now, I’m thinking about Germany, then we’ll see. The most dangerous rival for the Scudetto? I don’t like to talk in these terms, I see many strengthened teams. We look at ourselves and think about winning all the games. The goal remains to win the championship. And even in the Champions League, we look step by step.”
Addressing his future at Inter, de Vrij expressed his desire to stay but remained non-committal: “If it were up to me, I would stay at Inter. But calmly: I’m focusing on this season and then we’ll see.”
De Vrij’s playing time has decreased this season, having started only against Monza in the league and Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League. His contract is set to expire on June 30, 2025, as is that of his defensive colleague and positional rival, Francesco Acerbi. Inter holds a unilateral option for a one-year extension for both players.
