De Laurentiis: ‘TV rights? Italian football will die, it is a defeat’

Start

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis believes the new deal between Serie A and Sky and DAZN is a ‘defeat’. It was confirmed earlier that the Lega Serie A has agreed terms with both broadcasting channels on a deal for the Serie A TV rights from 2024-29. Speaking while leaving the assembly, De Laurentiis shared his anger at the outcome, saying:

“Italian football will die, it is a defeat. This way the value of Italian football will never be implemented, where it is always thought that it should be supported by others, while it should only be the fans, with whom we should have a direct relationship”.

‘The entrepreneur must know how to measure the area of risk, it is more comfortable but this will never implement the value of Italian football. The value of Italian football passes through investments.

“Italian football always thinks it has to be supported by others, but the fan is the absolute asset of a football club. My relationship must be direct with the fan, not direct with Sky and DAZN, which in my opinion is not competent. It does no good as Sky does not do well to Italian football.”

“My colleagues in the league like to be passively operative in the system. I, who have never played passively, hate operating in this way. Then there is the foolishness of making a deal for five years. In times of crisis, cinema and football are two things that are going strong, they are the panacea to the pains of everyday life, but we have put this dream in the drawer. Sky and DAZN do not make these big investments.”
