Davide Calabria has officially embarked on a new chapter of his career with Bologna, leaving behind an emotional farewell to AC Milan, the club where he spent 18 years. The Italian right-back, now wearing the colours of Bologna, spoke candidly about his departure from Milan and his excitement for the future during his first press conference at Casteldebole.
Calabria reflected on his decision to leave Milan, hinting at unresolved issues that made staying untenable. “More than a desire for revenge, I want to play consistently, as I’ve done for the past 7-8 years,” he stated. “In recent months, certain things created difficulties. I won’t go into details, but there were unpleasant situations. Today, I’m happy to be here. I haven’t shed a burden; instead, I’ve found the healthy environment I was looking for, full of positivity and a strong work ethic.”
The 28-year-old also alluded to a publicized clash with Milan coach Sergio Conceição during the match against Parma, as well as other internal challenges in his final months at Milanello. However, he chose not to dwell on these incidents, focusing instead on his new surroundings in Bologna. “Coming here was a well-thought-out decision,” he explained. “It’s the right choice for everyone involved. While there was sadness in leaving Milan—where I grew up and gave so much—I’ve found great potential here in Bologna. The city is beautiful, and the energy is truly positive.”
Looking ahead to Bologna’s upcoming match against Milan in two weeks, Calabria expressed excitement: “I can’t wait to play that game. It will be a mix of emotions and a first-time experience for me.”
Calabria’s move to Bologna comes under unique circumstances—a five-month loan deal that coincides with the expiration of his contract at Milan. This arrangement reflects Calabria’s confidence in his abilities and his focus on proving himself without long-term guarantees. “This move shows my ambition,” he said. “I didn’t think about contracts or transfers; I just want to give my best. The financial aspect is the least of my concerns.”
Calabria also revealed that regaining his peace of mind has reignited his aspirations for both club and country. “Now that I’ve found serenity again, I’m thinking about wearing the Azzurri jersey once more,” he shared.
Bologna’s sporting director Marco Di Vaio echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the club’s openness to discussing Calabria’s future beyond June: “We know how hard it was for him to leave home after so many years. His contract runs until June, and then we’ll sit down and talk about what’s next. For now, we’re focused on the present.”
As for immediate goals, Calabria is eager to help Bologna secure European football: “I’ve played in the Champions League consistently over recent years, and I want to return to competing in European tournaments.” He also noted similarities between Bologna coach Vincenzo Italiano’s tactical demands and those of Stefano Pioli at Milan: “Italiano asks full-backs to perform tasks similar to what Pioli wanted from me. I’m ready.”
