Napoli’s surprisingly strong start to the season has propelled them to the top of the Serie A table for the moment. With Como set to visit the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Friday, Antonio Conte spoke to the press to discuss the upcoming match and Napoli’s current position.
Addressing Napoli’s top spot, Conte said, “We manage it by continuing to work calmly. We know very well that we’re at the beginning of the season. This is a settling period for all teams, considering that six different teams have alternated at the top. For us, it’s important to store hay in the barn, it keeps us more relaxed. Conte also commented on his players’ improvement, stating, “Every player improves with me, that’s the story.”
The manager spoke about reuniting with Cesc Fabregas, his former player at Chelsea, who now plays for Como: “I won the Premier League and FA Cup with him at Chelsea. Personally, I always thought he could embark on this career. He was a player who played in midfield and always asked why about certain things. I’m happy for him. Como is currently the revelation team.”
Regarding Romelu Lukaku, Conte said, “Romelu is doing well, but he needs specific work: his is a different machine. But he’s a player who’s starting to be in good condition, he’s perfectly integrated. For me, he’s a player who always makes a difference.”
When asked if playing first in the round while being at the top is an advantage, Conte jokingly replied, “It’s an advantage if we win. We’ll be the first to play: we would have the possibility, by winning, to stay on top, but it’s fundamental to continue earning points. All matches are difficult.”
Addressing the pressure of being at the top, Conte concluded with a metaphor: “We wanted the bicycle? We have to pedal hard.”
