Conte: “Both Kvaratskhelia and Lukaku need to be assessed”

Start

As the Serie A season resumes after the international break, Napoli are gearing up for their match against Cagliari on Sunday at the Unipol Domus. Ahead of the game, Napoli head coach Antonio Conte, addressed the media at the the Partenopei’s training Center in Castel Volturno.

Expectations and Team Integration

Conte expressed his desire for his team to maintain consistent performance and results. He emphasized the importance of new arrivals adapting quickly to the team’s dynamics. “I expect continuity in performance and results, and for the new players to integrate into our system as soon as possible. I expect continuity from the group,” Conte stated.

Romelu Lukaku’s Progress

Regarding Romelu Lukaku, Conte noted that the striker has used the break to improve both physically and tactically. “Romelu has used this break to try to fully integrate into the team’s tactical and physical framework. He has shown great commitment, even training on his days off. He is improving in all aspects. Whether he will start against Cagliari? There are still two more training sessions before I make a decision.”

Reflecting on His First 100 Days

Conte reflected on his first 100 days at Napoli, describing them as intense and productive. “It has been 100 very intense days. We had to work not only on the field but also off it. I am satisfied because these days have set a direction for us. It’s very important for me and for Napoli.”

Assessing Kvaratskhelia and Lukaku

Conte also addressed the conditions of key players Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Lukaku. “The international players have returned in good condition. Kvara had an ankle issue, and like with Lukaku, we will evaluate him in the next two training sessions before making any decisions.”

Embracing Change and Responsibility

Conte acknowledged the significant pressure and responsibility of his role. “I carry a great deal of pressure and responsibility. Having won in the past, expectations are always high. The market has brought significant changes, with 7 new players coming in and 12-13 leaving. This indicates a major transformation. I am aware of the expectations and will handle them normally, focusing on delivering results through hard work.”

Tactical Adjustments

Conte discussed potential tactical adjustments, emphasizing that changes will be made to improve the team’s balance between offensive and defensive phases. “We’ve been using one system for two and a half months, and I hope to see improvements. The market has brought enhancements. We’re working on finding the best fit for Napoli. Coaches are like tailors; we need to choose the best outfit for our team. We are working on finding a balance between offense and defense.”

McTominay and Gilmour

Conte shared positive impressions of Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour, noting their professionalism and the competition they bring. “I have received excellent impressions of them; they are serious players who elevate the level of competition. This is the path we need to follow—creating a squad with competitiveness rather than predetermined positions.”

Folorunsho’s Role

Conte addressed the situation with Folorunsho, who was temporarily sidelined but has now been reintegrated. “Folorunsho was a full Napoli player, but market circumstances had him training separately. He has been reintegrated, is a hardworking individual, and will contribute positively. We are pleased to have him with us.”

Facing Cagliari

Conte previewed the match against Cagliari, acknowledging the challenge posed by a team managed by Davide Nicola. “We are facing a tough team, as all of Nicola’s teams are. We respect him greatly and know he has done well wherever he has been. We expect a heated environment and are aware that Cagliari has always been a difficult opponent. We need to maintain consistency in our results and performances.”

On Napoli’s Ambitions

Conte commented on Napoli’s progress and his role in the club’s history. “Today, I am part of Napoli’s history, even though it has only been 100 days. This gives me great pride. The president and his family have committed to Napoli for 20 years, and it is rare to find such dedication today. It is important to continue growing, both on and off the field.”

Juventus and Focus

Conte emphasized the need for focus on each game rather than looking too far ahead. “We must not be provincial by focusing only on the next game without considering Juventus next week. Our focus should be solely on Cagliari. We need to think game by game, striving to improve continually.”

Player Evaluations

Regarding David Neres, Conte stated that every player’s position is subject to ongoing evaluation based on their performance in training. “The situation depends on the players themselves, not just on me. Everyone is in question every week. David has contributed significantly in his appearances so far. I expect him to fit into our system, understanding both the offensive and defensive aspects.”

Handling Challenges

Conte addressed the importance of handling challenging situations with determination. “There are games where everything goes smoothly and others where you have to get your hands dirty. We must match the competitive spirit of our opponents. It’s crucial to stay attentive and persistent. Last year, conceding 48 goals might be due to not getting our hands dirty enough.”

Formation Flexibility

Conte discussed his approach to tactical flexibility, noting that adjustments are made based on the team’s needs rather than tradition. “We cannot cling to a formation for years; with new signings, new possibilities arise. We need to work on defensive and offensive systems. Any changes will be to find the best fit, not to follow trends or old traditions.”

Anguissa and Lobotka

Conte praised the efforts of Stanislav Lobotka and André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, highlighting their significant contributions and work ethic. “Lobotka and Anguissa have been overachieving, playing in all the league matches and the Coppa Italia. They are strong players with room for improvement. I’m satisfied with their contribution but believe there is still room to grow.”

Buongiorno’s Versatility

Finally, Conte discussed the versatility of Torino’s Buongiorno, noting his potential for further development. “Buongiorno has played both as a central defender and as a full-back. He has room for growth in all aspects and can play in various positions. His role is not fixed.”
