Cristian Chivu, the former Inter Milan defender and current Primavera coach, recently shared his thoughts on his former teammate Dejan Stankovic and their intertwined paths in football. Speaking In an interview, Chivu spoke about their time together at Inter and their current roles as coaches.
Chivu and Stankovic were integral parts of Inter’s successful period under José Mourinho, winning multiple titles including the historic treble in 2010. Their bond, forged on the pitch, has continued off it as both transitioned into coaching careers.
Speaking about Stankovic’s potential as a coach, Chivu expressed confidence in his former teammate’s abilities. “Dejan has always had a great football mind,” Chivu remarked. “His understanding of the game and leadership qualities were evident during our playing days. It’s no surprise to see him pursuing a coaching career.”
Chivu also touched on the challenges of transitioning from player to coach, a journey both he and Stankovic have undertaken. “It’s a different perspective, being on the sidelines,” he explained. “But the passion for the game remains the same. We’re both learning and growing in our new roles.”
The Romanian coach highlighted the importance of their shared experiences at Inter, suggesting that it provides a solid foundation for their coaching careers. “What we learned at Inter, especially under Mourinho, was invaluable. Those lessons in tactics, mentality, and team management are things we can apply in our coaching,” Chivu stated.
When asked about Stankovic’s future prospects, Chivu was optimistic. “Dejan has the potential to become a top coach. He has the knowledge, the experience, and most importantly, the character to succeed at the highest level,” he affirmed.
Chivu also reflected on his own journey with Inter’s youth team, emphasizing the importance of developing young talent. “Working with the Primavera is incredibly rewarding. It’s about shaping the future of the club and the sport,” he said.
