As Juventus and PSV Eindhoven prepare for their crucial Champions League playoff first leg on February 11, both teams are grappling with significant injury concerns that could shape the outcome of the tie.
Juventus manager Thiago Motta faces a defensive crisis, with Pierre Kalulu still sidelined due to a muscular injury sustained in their previous Champions League outing against Benfica. The French defender’s absence is compounded by long-term injuries to Bremer and Juan Cabal, both recovering from ACL surgeries.
The Old Lady’s attacking options are also limited, with Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik not expected to return from a calf problem until March. Additionally, Andrea Cambiaso, who recently attracted interest from Manchester City, is doubtful due to an ankle issue.
There was a silver lining for Juventus in their recent Serie A victory over Como, as Newcastle United loanee Lloyd Kelly made his debut. However, Motta is likely to favor Nicolo Savona in the starting lineup for the European fixture.
PSV’s defensive lineup is equally uncertain. Manager Peter Bosz faces a dilemma following Adamo Nagalo’s injury during the weekend’s draw with Willem II. This setback is particularly challenging as Olivier Boscagli is also nursing a muscular problem.
The Dutch side does have some positive news, with Ryan Flamingo available after serving a Champions League suspension. He could partner with Armando Obispo in central defense. Meanwhile, Manchester United loanee Tyrell Malacia, who started against Willem II, might be replaced by Mauro Junior.
PSV will also be without Malik Tillman, Ricardo Pepi, and Richard Ledezma due to various injuries. Despite these absences, the team will look to their experienced captain, Luuk de Jong, who has already netted 14 goals this season across all competitions.
