Fabio Capello, former manager of Milan, Juventus, Roma, and other top clubs, recently shared his insights on the current form of Inter, Juventus, and Milan in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport. He focused on the impact of key strikers Lautaro, Vlahovic, and Morata, who all scored in the sixth round of the Serie A season.
On Lautaro Martinez, Capello stated: “The fact that a player like Lautaro has found his scoring form is very significant. Goal scorers can go through difficult periods, it’s happened to almost all the greats, but when you have class, you always come out of it. Lautaro has always been a great player and he’s charismatic too. He and Thuram communicate well, they find each other, they look for each other: it’s a pleasure to see them together. And now that the Argentine is scoring again, Inter will find it easier to win.”
Regarding Inter’s overall performance, Capello noted: “The Nerazzurri need to adjust their defensive phase a bit: they’ve conceded seven goals in the first six matches, last year they accustomed us to something different. From this point of view, Simone Inzaghi’s team’s problem is that compared to the past, there’s a lack of midfield filter, and consequently, the defenders sometimes struggle. If Inter manages to fix this aspect, they will have solved most of their problems.”
On Vlahovic and Juventus, Capello observed: “The Bianconeri were a bit disappointing in the first half, playing along the lines of previous performances: slow and predictable possession. But in the second half, once they broke the deadlock, they showed that they have excellent potential. I really liked the desire of the attackers in Thiago Motta’s team: they put a lot of pressure on the opponents to recover the ball and threw themselves well into spaces. After the 1-0, Genoa lowered their defensive level and it was all easy for Juve. Vlahovic changed gear after the penalty: for the second goal, he was very good not only in the finish but also in the movement.”
Capello attributed Milan’s recent success to their strikers: “One of the secrets of this mini positive series, in my opinion, is in the movements of Tammy Abraham and Alvaro Morata. Both are very mobile players who help the midfielders and open up spaces. Morata does this work particularly well: he often drops deep without losing clarity in the goal area.”
On squad rotation, Capello advised: “Milan and Inter (with Frattesi replacing Barella) played with their starters. That’s right: first you get the points and then you think about rotation. The championship has just begun, the rhythms are high and the players are not tired. When we get to February or March, then we can think about doing a reasoned rotation.”
