Calhanoglu to testify in Ultras Investigation upon return from national duty

Start

Inter Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu is set to be questioned by investigators next week as part of the ongoing probe into the relationship between ultras groups and Serie A clubs. The Turkish international, currently away on national team duty, is expected to meet with the Milan Mobile Police unit upon his return to Italy.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report how Calhanoglu will be the third Inter player or staff member to testify, following head coach Simone Inzaghi and vice president Javier Zanetti. None of the three are under investigation themselves, but authorities are seeking information on their interactions with ultras leaders.

The questioning is likely to take place on Wednesday or Thursday, after Turkey’s Nations League match against Iceland on Monday night. Inter have adjusted their training schedule to accommodate returning international players.

Investigators are particularly interested in Calhanoglu’s relationship with Marco Ferdico, a former leader of Inter’s Curva Nord ultras group who is currently in custody. Wiretaps revealed Ferdico claiming he had dinner with Calhanoglu and his family in August 2023. The investigation also alleges that Ferdico frequently met with the Turkish player and received jerseys as gifts, which were then passed on to Antonio Bellocco, a figure linked to the ‘Ndrangheta organized crime group.

This inquiry is part of a wider investigation dubbed “Double Curva” that is examining illegal activities of ultras groups associated with both Inter and AC Milan. The probe has already led to multiple arrests and is shedding light on the complex relationships between hardcore fan groups, players, and club management in Italian football.
