Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu admits that making the switch from city rivals Milan to Inter ‘wasn’t an easy step’. The Turkish international was interviewed by the UEFA website ahead of the upcoming Champions League final against Manchester City and talked about the importance of playing the game in his homeland and his dreams of lifting the trophy in Istanbul:
“I love Istanbul, it is the most beautiful city for me. I like it every time I go there, also because our culture is very interesting. I can’t wait to be there, I am very happy to play in Turkey.”
It can be a chance to boost morale after the earthquake.
“I have to do something for Turkey as a captain in these difficult times. We don’t stop trying to help them, the final I hope will give some joy.”
Moving from Milan to Inter Milan was a brave choice.
“The first day I arrived everyone knew it was not an easy step for me, but the club and teammates welcomed me very well and I was immediately happy.”
What a duel will it be with Gundogan
“He is the captain of Manchester City, I have great respect for him. It will not be easy for him either though, although he is a very good footballer, I respect him since he is more experienced than me, but I will do everything to beat him.”
Is winning the Champions League a dream?
“We are so close that dreaming a little bit is normal. I knew we could get here, I’m honest. I want to be the first Turk to win a Champions League, then in Istanbul…. Hopefully the dream will come true.”
