In the aftermath of Cagliari’s impressive 4-1 victory over Lecce, manager Davide Nicola shared his thoughts on the match and his team’s performance in a post-game press conference.
Nicola began by analyzing the flow of the game, noting, “The first half was like a chess match, although we had several opportunities. We only conceded one chance, which Lecce, a well-organized team, was able to capitalize on. We didn’t fall apart and reacted well.”
The manager expressed particular satisfaction with the performance of Gaetano, who made the most of his opportunity. “I’m happy; he took advantage of the chance given to him. He showed a different level of sharpness,” Nicola commented.
Discussing his tactical decisions, Nicola explained the reasoning behind his substitutions: “We knew we could suffer against this Lecce side, but we believed from start to finish. Marin, Deiola, and Gaetano were brought on together because we needed different characteristics in midfield. The substitutions don’t prove that I’m clever, but that I have a squad of 18 important players.”
Nicola also addressed the consistent performance of Luperto, saying, “He played all the matches last year too; he knows how to manage himself. It might happen that I’ll give him a rest. Continuity is important; look at Zappa or Obert as well.”
The Cagliari boss concluded by reflecting on the tight nature of the league table, particularly in the lower half. “It only takes losing one game to find yourself down there. It’s a peculiar championship in the lower zone,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus and consistency in their fight for survival.
