Cagliari coach Nicola: “Character was never an Issue. We overcame difficulties well”

In an incredible turn of events during the 6th round of Serie A, Cagliari secured their first 3 points of the season in a thrilling 2-3 away victory against Parma. Following the match, Cagliari’s coach Davide Nicola shared his thoughts with DAZN.

Nicola began by highlighting the importance of the week’s training: “The work week was necessary because unfortunately, as I believe some of my colleagues also think, teams are often formed at the last minute, and you don’t have time to prepare and bring everyone to the same level of fitness. We still have players who need to reach 100% of their capabilities. However, it was a way to vary and try out some situations.”

Addressing the team’s character, Nicola stated: “It has never been a problem of character. The players have an attachment to the shirt and the environment that often leads them to have eagerness and waste energy because they want the best for these fans. We know very well what this season’s objective is, and we’ll have to fight until the end, but we want to do it with an attitude of courage in trying to play and with order and aggressiveness in defending. Sometimes you succeed, and where you don’t, you shouldn’t lose balance.”

Nicola disagreed with the notion that the team was going through a delicate period: “I don’t quite agree that this was a delicate period. For me, it would be delicate if the team had no ideas or didn’t play with courage. We did well in two Coppa Italia matches and in two other matches we brought home a point. We lost to two in-form teams like Empoli and Napoli. Tonight we were good at coming away from home and demonstrating the continuity of what we’re working on and the courage to want to play, against an opponent that can create difficulties for you on the counterattack if you’re not well-positioned.”
