Atalanta midfielder Marco Brescianini spoke to the press from the Italian national team’s training camp, as they prepare for Nations League matches against France and Israel under new coach Luciano Spalletti.
Discussing his characteristics, Brescianini said, “I believe the coach has valued my running, versatility, and professionalism. I think I can play as a midfielder or in another midfield role.”
On his call-up, he noted, “I’ve made a fairly gradual climb. This has helped me in some ways, but in terms of experience on big stages, I’m lacking something. However, I believe this call-up has come at the right moment.”
Brescianini praised his time at Frosinone and manager Eusebio Di Francesco: “The experience in Serie A with Frosinone was crucial. Coach Di Francesco, his staff, and sporting director Angelozzi played a fundamental role in my growth. There was an excellent group there.”
He also acknowledged Gennaro Gattuso’s influence: “He was also fundamental, being the first coach to believe in me and help me understand what it meant to approach the world of professional football.”
Describing his emotions about joining the national team, Brescianini said, “For me, it’s a dream come true. Perhaps today I still don’t realize it, and the feelings were immediately positive. After the speeches from the coach and Buffon, I immediately saw the team eager not to repeat past mistakes. Now it’s up to us to honor this shirt, we’ll give it our all.”
When asked about his idol, Brescianini mentioned Sergej Milinkovic-Savic: “I don’t feel that close to him yet, I have to prove myself. I mentioned his name as a prototype and model. My personal goal is to improve every day, and in the future, I want to be Brescianini, not compared to other players.”
On his preferred position, he stated, “My perfect role is as a right midfielder, although last year I played in all midfield positions. If needed, I’ll play any role.”
Regarding Atalanta’s recent focus on Italian players, Brescianini commented, “We’ve all seen what a reality Atalanta has become in recent years. It’s an honor for me, and now I want to repay this trust.”
When asked if his call-up was more like Cesare Cremonini’s “Un giorno migliore” (A Better Day) or Vasco Rossi’s “Come nelle favole” (Like in Fairy Tales), Brescianini chose the latter, emphasizing the dream-like nature of his national team selection.
