BREAKING: Gennaro Gattuso sacked by Marseille

Start

Olympique Marseille have officially parted ways with head coach Gennaro Gattuso, along with his coaching staff. Fabrizio Romano now reports that the decision was conveyed to Gattuso and his team by the Marseille board earlier today following a string of disappointing performances by the Ligue 1 side. Less than 5 months after taking charge, Gattuso reportedly feels unable to work miracles with the players at his disposal.

On September 27th, Olympique Marseille announced the arrival of Gennaro Gattuso, replacing the departing Marcelino. It was an unexpected shake-up in Marseille’s season, which had already started on the wrong foot with elimination from the Champions League against Panathinaikos and the unsuccessful switch to a 4-4-2 formation. The arrival of the strong-willed Italian was intended to reintroduce a sense of demand at the heart of the Olympian project.

However, the observed lack of character within the Marseille squad in recent weeks seems to have overwhelmed the determined coach. According to sources close to the Italian coach, Gennaro Gattuso believes he no longer has the solutions to turn around Marseille’s fortunes. Marseille has only won one match in 2024, in the Coupe de France against Thionville. Since then, both in Ligue 1 and the Europa League, the team has struggled to secure victories or maintain results.

Strasbourg, Rennes, Monaco, Lyon, Metz, Brest – all opponents who have taken advantage of the Olympian players’ apparent apathy, with performances rarely convincing. The winter transfer window ultimately did not address the shortcomings observed in the first half of the season, exemplified by the unfortunate Ulisses Garcia, who gifted a goal to Lees-Melou against Brest on Sunday night. Gattuso appeared helpless in the face of his players’ lack of fight, despite being shaken by both the management (as in the case of Jonathan Clauss) and the supporters.
