Bologna’s Lewis Ferguson signs contract extension until 2029

Start

Bologna, riding high on their Champions League qualification, are preparing for the upcoming season with renewed vigor. Behind the scenes, sporting director Giovanni Sartori is already planning for the future, with a significant move regarding Lewis Ferguson’s contractual situation. The player’s father, Derek Ferguson, a former footballer himself, has revealed important details about his son’s future with the club.

In an episode of the “Let me be frank podcast,” a British podcast hosted by former Scottish footballer Frank McAvennie, Derek Ferguson disclosed a crucial development: “Bologna has just renewed his contract. He will stay until 2029.” This extension had been in the works for some time, as the club sought to prolong the relationship that was originally set to expire in 2027. It’s a strategic move by Bologna to maintain full control over the future of a player they highly value, especially considering the interest he had attracted from several Italian giants and Premier League clubs before his injury.

Ferguson has been sidelined for over five months following a severe knee injury involving his anterior cruciate ligament. While his return is not imminent, given that such injuries typically require at least 7-8 months of recovery, Derek Ferguson provided reassuring updates on his son’s progress:

“I’ve seen some footage of his training, and it surprised me. It’s been five and a half months since the injury. He’s really making giant strides. Lewis didn’t just tear his ACL; he also had a medial collateral ligament injury. Usually, these injuries take somewhere between nine and twelve months for a full recovery. When I saw those training images, I was amazed, wondering if it was possible for him to move like that at this point. But it’s worth noting that everything has changed compared to my time. I don’t want to overdo it with enthusiasm, but inside I’m overjoyed. The rehabilitation is progressing very well.”
