Bologna’s Ferguson returns to group training six months after Injury

Start

Bologna midfielder Lewis Ferguson has rejoined group training six months after suffering a knee injury. The Scottish international’s return comes as welcome news for manager Vincenzo Italiano following the team’s frustrating 2-2 draw against Genoa in Serie A and a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa in the Champions League.

Bologna officially announced Ferguson’s return to full training with his teammates, marking a significant milestone in his recovery process. The club stated that the midfielder participated in regular training sessions, including small-sided games and tactical work, just two days before their upcoming match against AC Milan.

Ferguson’s injury, a rupture of the right cruciate ligament, occurred towards the end of the 2023/24 season, forcing him to miss the final six league matches and ruling him out of Scotland’s Euro 2024 campaign. The midfielder has already been sidelined for the first eight matches of the current season.

While it’s premature to expect Ferguson to start immediately, his return to full training opens the possibility of him being included in the squad for the upcoming home fixture against AC Milan. Manager Italiano may consider adding Ferguson to the matchday squad, with the official list typically announced the day before the game.

Ferguson’s return is particularly significant given his crucial role in Bologna’s historic qualification for the Champions League last season under former coach Thiago Motta. His presence in midfield has been sorely missed, and his comeback could provide a substantial boost to the team’s performance in both domestic and European competitions.
