Bologna’s El Azzouzi faces extended Injury layoff

Start

Bologna are grappling with an injury setback as midfielder Oussama El Azzouzi faces a potentially lengthy recovery period. The 23-year-old Moroccan international has been struggling with fitness issues stemming from knee injuries sustained during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Pazza Di Fanta report that recent medical examinations have revealed that El Azzouzi’s condition is more complex than initially thought, with the addition of a hernia complicating his recovery. The club has taken the precautionary measure of excluding him from their Champions League squad list, indicating he could be sidelined until mid-November.

Bologna’s management acted swiftly in the final days of the transfer window, securing the services of Tommaso Pobega to bolster their midfield options. This acquisition aims to provide cover and allow El Azzouzi the necessary time to fully recuperate without rushing his return to action.

The absence of El Azzouzi compounds Bologna’s midfield woes, with Lewis Ferguson, a key player from last season, also currently unavailable. Manager Vincenzo Italiano now faces the challenge of navigating both domestic and Champions League fixtures with limited rotation options in the middle of the park.

Bologna’s start to the season has been less than ideal, with the team yet to secure a victory in their opening Serie A matches. They have managed only two points from three games, drawing 1-1 against both Udinese and Empoli at home, while suffering a 3-0 defeat away to Napoli.
