The joint signing between Bologna FC and Webuild, a multinational corporation specializing in large-scale projects, for the renovation of the Dall’Ara Stadium was intended to clear up doubts and uncertainties surrounding the city’s stadium redevelopment. However, significant challenges remain.
According to recent analyses by Calcio e Finanza, the Dall’Ara renovation project continues to be a complex puzzle. The primary issue revolves around the economic funding required for the project, which includes both the stadium renovation and the construction of a temporary structure in the Caab area on the outskirts of Bologna.
The total cost of the project is estimated at €200 million, with Bologna FC expected to contribute €110 million and the municipality €40 million. This leaves a substantial funding gap of €50 million, and the source of this remaining amount is currently unknown. Consequently, it’s impossible to predict the start and completion dates for the renovation work.
The agreement between Bologna FC, led by President Joey Saputo, and Webuild includes an exclusivity clause until 2027. However, many uncertainties persist beyond this point. The approaching deadline for Bologna’s bid to host Euro 2032 adds further pressure to the situation.
The Dall’Ara renovation has been a topic of discussion in Bologna since 2016. The original plan included the construction of a sports complex with parking facilities, a shopping center, and a fashion outlet near the stadium, with an estimated cost of €70-80 million. However, this proposal faced significant opposition from various quarters.
The current renovation plan has also encountered criticism. The stadium’s location in a densely populated area with limited parking has led some to advocate for the construction of a new stadium in a more peripheral location. Architect Luca Drago, for instance, suggests, “A site outside the urbanized area but connected to the Bologna context, such as Borgo Panigale or the Fiera area, would be preferable.”
The debate between renovating the existing Dall’Ara Stadium and building a new facility in a less congested area continues, with proponents of the latter option acknowledging that it would likely increase costs for Joey Saputo’s club. As discussions progress, the future of Bologna’s football stadium remains uncertain, balancing tradition, practicality, and financial considerations.
