Bologna are still at work to find a new central defender to bolster their backline following the official transfer of Riccardo Calafiori to Arsenal. The Italian club has set its sights on experienced German defender Mats Hummels, who became a free agent on June 30 after his contract with Borussia Dortmund expired.
However, Bologna’s sporting director Giovanni Sartori has revealed that Hummels is not the only target they are pursuing. In a recent interview with Sportitalia (as quoted by Calciomercato), Sartori provided insight into the club’s transfer strategy:
“The Hummels deal is one of several negotiations we’re keeping open. To secure a player, you need to be in talks with multiple candidates. Everyone knows we had contact with Hummels some time ago, but now we’re assessing what the market offers. We’ve been negotiating with others as well.”
Sartori went on to explain their approach: “We’ve narrowed down our options to three top choices. When we receive a positive response from one of them, whether it’s Hummels or one of the others, we’ll proceed with the signing.”
As Vincenzo Italiano’s side looks to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season, fans will be eagerly awaiting news of which defender will ultimately join their ranks. The club’s methodical approach to the transfer market suggests they are determined to make a significant addition to their backline, with quality and fit being key considerations in their decision-making process.
