Beto’s transfer saga: Torino, Atalanta, and Roma vie for Everton striker

Start

The January transfer window is often a time of opportunity for players seeking a fresh start after disappointing spells. Beto, the Brazilian striker currently at Everton, finds himself at the center of transfer speculation as he looks to revive his career following a challenging 18 months in England.

Beto arrived in Italy in 2021 when Udinese paid €7 million to acquire him from Portimonense. His time in Udine was impressive, showcasing his physical strength and goal-scoring ability with 22 goals in 65 appearances over two seasons. This performance convinced Everton to splash €38 million on him in 2023.

Calciomercato detail how Beto’s English adventure has not gone according to plan. Everton’s financial difficulties and poor form have contributed to a challenging environment. Last season, Beto managed only five goals in 37 appearances as Everton narrowly avoided relegation. This season has been even more difficult, with the striker starting just one game and scoring only once in ten appearances.

Torino have emerged as a strong contender for Beto’s signature. Following Duvan Zapata’s injury, the club held off on signing a free agent, preferring to wait for the January window. Everton is reportedly seeking a loan with an obligation to buy for up to €16 million, while Torino is offering a maximum of €7 million. Despite the gap, Torino’s sporting director Davide Vagnati is working to bridge the difference.

Atalanta have also entered the race for Beto. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini has hinted at the need for attacking reinforcements, and the club is exploring alternative deal structures. These include a conditional obligation to buy with an upfront payment of €8-10 million or a straight loan with a €2-3 million fee to outmaneuver Torino.

Surprisingly, Roma could emerge as a dark horse in the pursuit of Beto. The shared ownership of Roma and Everton by the Friedkin Group could facilitate negotiations. Roma is in need of a backup for Artem Dovbyk, and Beto’s familiarity with Serie A could make him an attractive option.
