Bernardeschi: ‘I miss playing in the Champions League’

Start

Former Juventus and Fiorentina winger Federico Bernardeschi says he misses playing in the Champions League. The Azzurri international is currently plying his trade in MLS, but speaking with La Gazzetta dello Sport, he concedes that he misses playing in Europe’s top competition and being in Italy:

“I had a great time here, the city is very beautiful and the people are crazy. Unfortunately we stumbled along the way, we didn’t expect to be so low in the standings, there were some problems that we hope to solve and recover from”.

“What am I missing? The Champions League, it’s normal to miss a bit of Italy, it’s my home. I can say that at the moment I’m in Toronto and I’m happy here, if there were to be opportunities I would honestly evaluate them together with the club”.

“Bonucci? I’m so sorry for this situation, because it’s not easy for anyone, especially for Leo. I heard it, he deserved to come out in a different way, if he really had to. There are internal dynamics that I don’t know about and they need to be evaluated, but seeing a symbol of a club be in this situation, humanly speaking, is a displeasure”.

“Morata at Inter? Seeing him there is difficult. Alvaro is a friend: it would be difficult to see him at Inter but he will certainly make the best decision for him. He is an atypical striker, there are many goalscorers in Europe, but Morata is a fundamental player for the team because he makes you play well, he attacks deep, technically he is strong, he always scores 15 goals”.

“Pulisic and Loftus Cheek? They are important players even if they come from two not very brilliant years. Milan will get to where they need to”.

“MLS will continue to grow. Saudi Arabia? A new reality but it has no history. Football in America has changed and will change again even with the arrival of the World Cup. Messi has arrived, which is no small thing, to also attract the attention of the new generations. What matters is this, by taking champions who value MLS, young people are starting to get more interested because here they are spoiled for choice about the sports to play, in the next 3-4 years there will be a new great momentum. Saudi? It’s a new reality but MLS has a story behind it that maybe Arabia will build over time but today the story is different.”
