Atalanta Considering Maldini Move: Understanding the Release Clause and Milan’s Potential Windfall

Start

Ademola Lookman’s injury has opened up new possibilities in the transfer market for Atalanta. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini emphasizes that any new signing would be a necessity rather than a luxury for the club. Among the potential targets to fill the void left by the Nigerian forward are Daniel Maldini, Giacomo Raspadori, and Rayan Cherki.

Calciomercato report that while Cherki’s acquisition seems challenging due to Lyon’s high asking price of around 30 million euros, and Conte is reluctant to let go of Raspadori, Maldini emerges as a more financially viable option for Atalanta.

The Bergamo-based club have been monitoring Maldini for some time, initially considering him for the next season when his release clause becomes active. From July 1st, 2025, Maldini’s contract will include a release clause of 12 million euros for Italian clubs and 15 million for foreign teams. However, this clause is not currently active in the January transfer window, meaning Atalanta would need to negotiate directly with Monza if they wish to secure Maldini’s services immediately.

Monza, while not having received any official offers yet, has indicated their preference to retain Maldini until the end of the current season. This stance could complicate any potential mid-season move for the young attacking midfielder.

Interestingly, AC Milan maintains a financial interest in Maldini’s future, despite no longer holding his registration. The Rossoneri are set to receive 50% of any future transfer fee for the player. For instance, if Maldini is sold to an Italian club for the full release clause amount, Milan would pocket 6 million euros.

It’s worth noting that Milan does not hold any right of first refusal, buy-back clause, or the ability to match other offers for Maldini. Having let him go on a free transfer, their only potential income from his future move will be tied to the fee Monza manages to negotiate.
