Napoli manager Antonio Conte has clarified his stance on the ongoing situation with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia following the team’s victory against Hellas Verona. In a post-match interview with DAZN, Conte addressed the recent controversy surrounding the Georgian winger’s future at the club.
Conte emphasized that his previous comments about disappointment were not directed at Kvaratskhelia or the club, but rather at himself for failing to influence the situation over the past six months. He stated, “I want to underline something because I feel the need to do so. I spoke about disappointment not towards the player, not towards the club, but towards myself, because in six months I failed to change the situation.”
The Italian coach expressed his initial belief that he could have a more significant impact on the player’s decision to stay at Napoli. However, he admitted that despite his efforts, the situation remained unchanged. Conte explained, “I thought I could have a different impact in these six months, but I realized we were right back where we started from.”
Addressing media interpretations of his earlier statements, Conte clarified, “I saw some headlines today saying ‘Conte let down by Kvara.’ I am not let down by Kvara.” He reiterated that his disappointment stems from his inability to influence the situation positively.
Conte acknowledged that he might have been overly optimistic about his ability to change Kvaratskhelia’s mind. “Maybe I was a little presumptuous because I thought that I could have a stronger impact. I couldn’t do it. It’s a pity because this is a great player, but we also have to accept reality,” he admitted.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Kvaratskhelia’s future, Conte emphasized that the player remains a Napoli asset for now. He stated, “As of today, Khvicha is a Napoli player. We must not forget that. If someone wants to buy him, there is nothing to be taken for granted.”
The manager also praised the team’s professionalism and focus amid the transfer speculation, saying, “What I do want to underline is the solidity of this group because even with two players leaving and rumors on others, they maintained the concentration on the match, and I want to congratulate them for that.”
Conte’s comments suggest that while Kvaratskhelia’s departure is not certain, the club is prepared for the possibility. The situation remains fluid, with potential suitors like Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool reportedly interested in the talented winger.
