AC Milan’s midfield overhaul: Fofana pursuit and alternative options

Start

AC Milan are in the midst of a significant midfield restructuring as they look to bolster their squad for the upcoming season. After reinforcing their attack with Alvaro Morata and strengthening their defense with Strahinja Pavlovic, the Rossoneri are now focusing on revamping their midfield.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report that Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana remains Milan’s primary target. The club is waiting for an official response from Monaco regarding their latest offer, which is reportedly less than €20 million – significantly lower than West Ham’s €35 million bid. Milan’s strategy is to close deals on their own terms, a approach that has already proven successful with Pavlovic and nearly secured Emerson Royal.

However, Milan are also exploring alternatives should the Fofana deal fall through. Johnny Cardoso, a 22-year-old from Real Betis, is considered the primary backup option. His American citizenship is seen as an added bonus for the US-owned club.

Other potential targets include Manu Koné from Borussia Mönchengladbach, valued at around €15 million, and Lazar Samardzic from Udinese. While Samardzic offers more creativity but less physicality compared to Fofana, Udinese’s €25 million asking price may be a stumbling block.

The midfield reshuffle could also see departures. Ismael Bennacer is attracting interest from Saudi Arabian clubs, with Milan insisting on his €50 million release clause. Yacine Adli is another potential outgoing player, with Al Shabab showing interest. Milan values Adli at €15-20 million.
