English defender Chris Smalling is edging ever closer to a contract renewal with Roma, meaning he is likely to retire with the Giallorossi. The 33-year-old is into the final year of his existing deal with Roma but with no official announcement on an extension, Italian press had previously been keen to speculate that he could move to either Inter and Juventus.
Rome based Il Corriere dello Sport now report that after months of negotiations between both parties, Smalling is ready to agree to a new deal with the club. The newspaper suggest that the details of the contract extension are at the final stage and that the player has effectively given his ‘yes’ to remaining with the Giallorossi.
Il Tempo report that Smalling’s approval is on a new deal that will end in 2025 which will effectively take him to his 36th birthday, and potentially retirement from the game.
The Englishman joined Roma in 2019 and has gone on to become a vital part of their defensive setup, playing an integral role in their Conference League success last season.
