Inzaghi: ‘There’s disappointment, it was a bad night’

Start

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi believes it was another disappointing performance from Inter in their 2-1 loss to Spezia and says he takes responsibility for the loss. Inter looked to be in control of the game for large persiods, dominating possession and chance creation before Lautaro Martinez missed a chance to give them the lead from the penalty spot, ultimately allowing Spezia to go on and win the match 2-1  with goals from Daniel Maldini and M’Bala Nzola. Speaking with DAZN after the game (as quoted by FCInternews) Inzagji called it a ‘bad night’ and conceded that he was disappointed with the result but that there were encouraging periods of the match, despite the end result:

How many regrets are there for these now chronic problems for Inter in away matches?

“There is disappointment, it will be bad night but we play a Champions League round of 16 on Tuesday. This defeat hurts, but it came in a different way from the others. We put everything, we needed to be more ruthless to score a goal. You can’t end the first half 0-0, but that’s football. The defeat is bad, I take responsibility; the boys put everything into it, we had to be more cynical. This is football, in away matches the trend is negative. The result does not satisfy us but the team held the pitch well.

Should Lukaku have kicked the first penalty?

“Lukaku and Lautaro are the two penalty takers, this year it never happened to have them on the pitch together because Lukaku was out so much. Dragowski was great, but I would dwell on the 28-29 shots; we needed more ruthlessness because we deserved the goal earlier. Then after the equaliser we shouldn’t have conceded the penalty to them”.

Will you now define the hierarchy of penalty takers?

“No, it’s the two of them. From time to time we will choose, they are both good”.

Have you already spoken with the team?

“No, we will talk tomorrow in Appiano. There will be plenty of time. This defeat hurts. We said goodbye to our fans, they were not happy but on the pitch the team gave everything. Clearly a defeat like this does not suit us, we need more ruthlessness and conviction.”

However, you did play great in the first 15-20 minutes.

“Yes, the team approached the match well. But we conceded goals on two occasions, we need to fix something outside of the San Siro. The trend must be changed, there are many teams there in the Champions League zone. We have to react, this is football: in three days there will be a very important match for our Champions League”.

How do you explain this away form?

“Last year we went a different way, this evening we needed more nastiness and conviction. Luck? I don’t believe in it, in football you have to look for luck.”
