Advocate General: ‘Clubs can’t play in Super league and UEFA competitions’

Start

Advocate General Athanasios Rantos has shared his conclusions on the proposed Super league, saying the competition can go ahead, but clubs cannot play in FIFA and UEFA competitions as well. Rantos said that the Super League can go ahead but they “cannot in parallel with the creation of such a competition, continue to participate in the football competitions organised by FIFA and UEFA without the prior authorization of those federations.”

A22, the promoters of the European Super League, have claimed that UEFA are operating an unfair monopoly by threatening to punish clubs that create competitions without authorisation.

The Advocates opinion isn’t binding, however their conclusions are followed in most cases, with an official ruling expected in March 2023.

The proposed Super League was initially launched by 12 of Europe’s elite competitions, but after it’s almost immediate collapse, only Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid remain part of the touted competition.

A22 have responded to the ruling, saying: “Advocate General Rantos states: UEFA is the dominant organiser of all major interclub competitions and bears “special responsibility” to ensure no third parties are unduly denied access to the market.”
