Rafael Leao’s father has confirmed that he is ‘working’ on a contract extension with Milan for his son, amidst interest from Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid. The Portugal international has a contract with the Rossoneri until 2024, but the club are keen to extend his deal and improve his salary.
Speaking to Portuguese newspaper Record, Antonio Leao confirmed that talks are definitely under way, although they will have to wait until after the World Cup is over:
We are working on it [Milan’s contract extension]. Until the expiration in 2024, we deal with everything, it’s not necessarily about Chelsea, Barcelona or Real Madrid.
He [Leao] loves staying in Italy and has. He has a predilection for Italians, the one the Portuguese don’t have for him.
He was named Best Serie A Player last season, not because he looks pretty, but simply because he is the best.”
Leao is part of Portugal’s 26-man squad for Qatar 2022 and Milan fear that a good performance at the World Cup could increase his salary demands, making it difficult to agree a new deal. The player has reportedly asked Milan to cover part of a €19m fine he owes to his former club Sporting for terminating his contract in 2018.
