Bologna Set Up Coppa Italia Final vs Milan

Vincenzo Italiano’s Bologna booked their spot in next month’s Coppa Italia final against Milan with a comfortable 5-1 victory over Empoli in the semi-finals, claiming a narrow 2-1 win in Thursday’s second leg after a 3-0 win in the first leg.

I Rossoblù got off to a flying start at Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, with midfielder Giovanni Fabbian powerfully heading home the opener from Nikola Moro’s cross after just seven minutes.

Charlampos Lykogiannis came close to doubling his side’s advantage on the night two minutes later, but Jacopo Seghetti was equal to it, palming his effort out over the crossbar.

Azzurri Empolesi had an excellent opportunity to pull one back at the 33-minute mark, and after Ola Solbakken’s initial strike was saved by Federico Ravaglia, Ukrainian midfielder Viktor Kovalenko was in the right place at the right time to tap home the rebound into an empty net.

The hosts had ample opportunity to extend their aggregate lead throughout the second half and to restore their advantage on the night, and they did just that in the 86th minute through Thijs Dallinga.

With the victory, Bologna are due to face Milan in the final at the Stadio Olimpico on 14 May, where they’ll be looking to lift the trophy for a third time in history and for the first time since 1974.

Up next for Italiano’s men, they return to Serie A action with an away trip to Udine to take on Udinese on Monday before welcoming Juventus to the Emilia-Romagna region six days later.

As for Empoli, they continue in their fight to retain their status in the Italian top-flight but face a tough couple of fixtures as they take on Fiorentina and Lazio in back-to-back matches.
