Scaloni: “Lautaro? I Was Never Worried, But There’s a Madness”

Argentina’s national team coach Lionel Scaloni is relishing Lautaro Martinez’s form. In a recent interview, Scaloni shared his thoughts on the Inter Milan striker and the upcoming Juventus-Inter match.

“I’ll be in Turin on Sunday evening for Juventus-Inter. I’m very curious and eager to watch one of the most important matches of the Italian season, a clash enriched by the distant duel between two of the best strikers in the world. Lautaro Martinez is doing great, he’s in a perfect state of mind, scoring many goals in 2025, and Kolo Muani is the winter’s acquisition, he’s just arrived and couldn’t have started better. It will be a great match,” Scaloni stated.

The coach expressed his unwavering confidence in Lautaro: “I’ve never been worried about Lautaro. He’s a complete player, not simply a striker whose value is measured by the goals he scores. He’s a player who makes the team play, and this is even more true in Inzaghi’s Inter: he drops deep to bring up the midfielders and dialogue with them, his movements are never random and are always positive for the team. His tactical intelligence makes him much more than a simple striker.”

Scaloni highlighted Lautaro’s importance to Inter, stating, “He’s the player symbol of Inter, the captain’s armband has great value, but in general, Lautaro is widely the most recognized player among the Nerazzurri, besides being a world champion.”

However, Scaloni expressed concern about the demanding schedule facing players like Lautaro. “World Cup qualifications and Club World Cup at the end of the season? It’s madness, absolute madness. These guys practically haven’t had holidays since last year’s Copa America. They returned to their clubs and never stopped: 6 World Cup qualification matches in South America with related round trips. I think it’s time to sit down and talk to design a slightly calmer calendar that works well for both national teams and clubs.”

Regarding Inter’s playing style, Scaloni praised their fluidity: “They play from memory, they know the exchanges and position movements perfectly, they do everything so naturally that it’s very difficult for opponents to counter this fluidity. Everyone says Inzaghi plays 3-5-2, but sometimes I try to understand how they play when they have the ball, and it’s not an easy thing to decipher.”
