Inter and AC Milan have unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art stadium to be constructed next to the iconic Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in San Siro. The ambitious project, estimated to cost over €1 billion, aims to modernize the clubs’ infrastructure while preserving the legacy of their historic home. The new stadium is set to open by 2030, marking a significant milestone for both clubs.
Key Features of the New Stadium
The proposed stadium will be built on the current parking area of San Siro and will have a capacity of approximately 71,500 seats. Of these, 13,000 will be dedicated to premium hospitality areas, including skyboxes, lounges, and VIP sections equipped with kitchens and exclusive services. Unlike the current San Siro, the new structure will eliminate traditional turnstiles and gates. Instead, access will be managed through a covered “podium” encircling the venue, ensuring a seamless and modern entry experience.
Timeline and Construction Goals
Inter and Milan plan to present the finalized project to the Municipality of Milan by early March 2025. If approved, construction is expected to begin in 2027, with completion targeted for 2030. The project represents a race against time as both clubs aim to meet administrative deadlines while navigating potential legal challenges.
Preserving San Siro’s Legacy
While the new stadium represents a leap into the future, efforts will be made to honour San Siro’s rich history. Plans include partially preserving sections of the current structure, such as Milan’s Curva Sud and parts of the lateral stands. These areas may be transformed into a museum or memorial space celebrating the clubs’ storied past. Additionally, new club headquarters and a hotel could be developed on-site, though environmental restrictions may complicate these plans.
Environmental and Infrastructure Enhancements
The project also emphasizes sustainability and urban development. Over 55,000 square meters of green spaces will be integrated into the design, along with 72,000 square meters of underground parking facilities. These additions aim to enhance the surrounding area while addressing environmental concerns.
The Cost and Funding
The estimated cost of €1 billion will be shared equally between Inter and Milan. Funding is expected to come from ownership groups—RedBird Capital for Milan and Oaktree Capital for Inter—as well as external loans from financial institutions.
The Fate of San Donato
While Milan have been exploring an alternative stadium project in San Donato, this proposal remains secondary to the joint venture at San Siro. Both clubs have reaffirmed their commitment to staying in Milan’s historic football district, making San Siro their top priority.
