Bologna manager Vincenzo Italiano recently shared his thoughts on the team’s performance, their Champions League experience, and highlighted some standout players in an interview with Sport Mediaset.
Reflecting on Bologna’s Serie A campaign, Italiano said, “We’ve done well to emerge from a difficult period in the league, where we had many draws and some stuttering performances. We managed to rise in the league standings despite the energy expended in the Champions League, securing important victories. Now we’re right behind the top teams.”
Regarding their Champions League exit, Italiano acknowledged the tough group they faced: “We had a very difficult group. We faced all the best teams, and they all advanced except for Shakhtar. In the first match against Shakhtar, we could have done more. If we had won, we might have gained extra momentum, but in the end, it was a good journey.”
The coach praised the Champions League experience: “It’s the mother of all competitions: packed stadiums, players of the highest quality, absolute champions. What impressed me was the rhythm, intensity, and great strength these teams have, which is evident when they take the field, putting personality and quality into every play.”
Italiano also discussed individual players, particularly praising Nicolás Dominguez: “Benji is a huge surprise. We knew about his skills and qualities; he was an important starter in his team in Argentina. He arrived here and after a period of adaptation, he’s emerging. He’s a boy with personality, afraid of nothing, good in one-on-one situations. In that area of the field, for how we want to express ourselves, he has the right qualities for us, and if he continues like this, he can carve out a great space for himself.”
On young striker Santiago Castro, Italiano was optimistic: “Let’s not forget he’s just turned twenty. He’s a boy who, given how he trains, his hunger, and the desire he puts into training, can really become a top player. He’s showing the qualities of a true center-forward, but he also adds great sacrifices for the team and often has the ability to make himself available for everyone. I’m convinced he has a bright future ahead of him.”
When asked about his aspirations for the end of the season, Italiano concluded, “I’d be happy with a Bologna that continues to grow and continues to dream of Europe, which is everyone’s dream.”
