Lazio’s Sporting Director Angelo Fabiani Discusses Transfers, Contracts, and Team Strategy

In a comprehensive interview, Lazio’s Sporting Director Angelo Fabiani provided insights into the club’s recent transfer activities, squad management, and future plans. Fabiani addressed various topics, including new signings, European squad selection, and contract renewals.

Regarding the acquisition of Provstgaard, Fabiani revealed the club’s thorough scouting process: “On August 25th, during the Superlega match, I sent someone to watch Provstgaard live. He was a player we had already identified during our scouting phase. Of course, you need to see him in person; video never gives you the complete picture.”

When questioned about the European squad list, Fabiani remained tight-lipped but assured that decisions were made in consultation with the coach and approved by the club. He stated, “We’ll submit the list shortly. Reflections have been made, in agreement with the coach and approved by the club, without altering the balance.”

Addressing rumors about Pellegrini’s potential move to Besiktas, Fabiani described it as “an extremely complex operation” and “a difficult solution,” noting that officially, they had received no requests for the player.

Fabiani emphasized the club’s long-term vision, stating, “Lazio has started a new cycle, which cannot be limited to a few months but must be evaluated over a minimum period of 3 years. It wasn’t a revolution, but almost.”

On the topic of player exclusions from the European list, Fabiani defended the decision-making process: “It’s an assessment made by the coach based on what he has in mind, certainly endorsed by the club. If Pellegrini is not part of the Serie A list, it’s a choice that I believe has been carefully considered from all angles by the coach and endorsed by the club.”

Fabiani expressed satisfaction with young players like Tchaouna and Noslin, despite their limited playing time: “We’re satisfied with Tchaouna and Noslin. I believe these guys will do something important in Lazio’s future.”

Regarding contract renewals, Fabiani adopted a relaxed stance: “Now that the transfer market is closed, why not, we can discuss it calmly. We have good Pedro, he’s 28, in Braga he ran like a 28-year-old. Mandas and Marusic deserve attention.”

When asked about the importance of Champions League qualification for the project, Fabiani remained cautious: “I’m more realistic than the king, I live game by game, I can’t make predictions. The numbers give you an idea, the team has shown a ‘range’, it can’t open completely but it can’t close either.”

Fabiani also shed light on the club’s transfer strategies, explaining how they navigate financial regulations: “When I say it’s an extended poker game, it’s because everyone bluffs. For Rovella and Pellegrini, an operation was carried out with an idea, we did the same now. It doesn’t mean we can’t pay, but there are many techniques to reach a goal without incurring sanctions or situations that are not contemplated.”

In conclusion, Fabiani emphasized the club’s commitment to strengthening the team while respecting the fans’ wishes. He revealed that Lazio had turned down offers totaling 100 million euros in January to avoid weakening the squad, demonstrating their dedication to maintaining a competitive team.
