Atalanta’s Injury Woes Mount as Scalvini and Kolasinac Exit Champions League Clash

Start

In a challenging night for Atalanta, the Italian side faced not only a tough 2-2 draw against Barcelona in the Champions League but also suffered significant injury setbacks. The match at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys saw two key defenders, Giorgio Scalvini and Sead Kolasinac, forced off the field due to injuries.

Scalvini, who had entered the game as a second-half substitute, was stretchered off in the closing minutes of the match. The young defender, who had only recently returned from a serious knee injury suffered in June 2024, appeared to have sustained a shoulder injury following an aerial challenge during a Barcelona corner. The incident occurred in the 88th minute, leaving Atalanta to finish the game with ten men, as manager Gian Piero Gasperini had already used all available substitutions.

Earlier in the match, at the 55-minute mark, Kolasinac had also been forced to leave the field, limping as he made way for Scalvini. This double blow to Atalanta’s defence compounds their injury concerns, with the team already missing Odilon Kossounou and Ademola Lookman due to previous injuries.

The extent of both Scalvini’s and Kolasinac’s injuries remains unclear, but their departures raise concerns for Atalanta’s upcoming fixtures. Scalvini’s situation is particularly worrying given his recent history of shoulder problems following his return from the ACL injury.
