Atalanta and manager Gian Piero Gasperini received disappointing news this morning as Ademola Lookman has been sidelined with an injury that could keep him out for several weeks. The club are now looking to the transfer market for a new attacking option.
Calciomercato report that Gasperini had already expressed the need for additional offensive reinforcement despite Mateo Retegui’s excellent form. With Gianluca Scamacca still in long-term recovery from a knee injury, the coach was keen on bolstering his attacking resources. Lookman’s injury has now accelerated these plans.
Initially thought to be a muscular issue, Lookman’s injury has been revealed to be a problem with his right knee. The Nigerian international, formerly of Leicester City, is expected to be out of action for at least a month.
Retegui has been in impressive form for Atalanta, scoring a crucial brace in their recent 2-1 comeback victory against Como. However, with Lookman unavailable for the upcoming Champions League clash against Barcelona and potentially beyond, Atalanta’s depth in attack is being tested.
The club is now intensifying its search for a new striker. While specific names have not been officially confirmed, reports suggest that Rayan Cherki is among the potential targets. Atalanta’s management is working diligently to identify and secure a suitable reinforcement before the transfer window closes.
