Capello: “Walker Will Make a Difference in Serie A”

Start

Former England manager Fabio Capello, who gave Kyle Walker his international debut, believes the defender’s move to AC Milan is a significant acquisition for the Italian club. Capello’s endorsement comes as Walker, now 34, prepares to join Milan after a trophy-laden career with Manchester City.

Reflecting on Walker’s debut for England in November 2011, Capello recalls, “I remember it well.” Now, over thirteen years later, the full-back is set to embark on a new challenge in Serie A.

Addressing concerns about Walker’s age, Capello dismisses them outright: “No, I disagree. I believe Kyle has the physical integrity to dominate in Italy for at least a couple of years. We saw it at the Euros and earlier in the Champions League. Just look at the recovery he made against Vinicius in the last clash between City and Real Madrid, only a few months ago. Against Vinicius, no less.”

Capello explains what convinced him to call up Walker for England at 21: “First of all, his speed, a quality he has retained over time. Back then, he was still playing for Tottenham, a promising youngster who only needed to work on his defensive discipline. And I think he managed to do that exceptionally well as he matured.”

When asked if Milan is adding a champion to their ranks, Capello responds enthusiastically: “I’d confidently say yes. Walker is a full-back who knows how to push forward and, most importantly, possesses quality in managing the ball in the final third. When he’s in the attacking third, he doesn’t get flustered and has the ability to make decisive plays. On top of that, he brings the experience and leadership of someone who has played and won at the highest levels. I don’t think Guardiola would make just anyone captain of a team capable of winning the Champions League.”

Regarding Walker’s versatility, Capello adds: “He has the maturity, personality, and athleticism to do it in emergency situations. But if you sign an exceptional full-back, I think it’s better to use him in the position where he has consistently proven to be one of the best in the world, right?”

Capello believes Walker can help address Milan’s mental inconsistencies: “Certainly. Walker is the kind of player who carries weight in the locker room and inspires others, partly because he has the status to do so. How many at Milan have won 18 trophies? None… And if Fonseca before and now Conceição point out mental gaps in the Rossoneri, I don’t think they’re talking nonsense. Adding a leader and a winner can help make that mental leap.”

On Milan’s other potential transfers and current situation, Capello concludes: “I have great respect for Conceição. In fact, he would have been my choice last summer. He’s a coach with the right characteristics. However, he needs time; he’s only just arrived.”
