As Atalanta prepare for their crucial Champions League clash against Sturm Graz, head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has emphasized the importance of focusing on the upcoming match after a disappointing defeat to Napoli. The team is set to face the Austrian champions on Tuesday, evening at the Gewiss Stadium.
Following their recent struggles, including a painful loss in Serie A, Atalanta finds themselves in 13th place in the Champions League super group, with three wins, two draws, and one loss totalling 11 points. Gasperini is keenly aware of the stakes involved, stating, “We have a great opportunity to qualify for the playoffs, and we cannot make mistakes.”
In his pre-match comments, Gasperini reflected on the nature of modern football: “Today’s football has become this. You need to have the ability to quickly archive one match and refocus on another; it’s a form of training that must be found.” He acknowledged the physical demands placed on his players but reassured fans about their fitness levels: “We have never been in difficulty from a physical point of view. There have been less brilliant matches, but that happens when you face close challenges.”
With injuries affecting his squad—most notably the absence of Zaniolo alongside Kossounou and Scamacca—Gasperini remains focused on the task at hand. He noted the need to respect Sturm Graz as they come into this match with strong momentum from leading their domestic league. “We must not underestimate tomorrow’s opponent because they run a lot, and that is always an indication of difficulty,” he added.
Gasperini also praised goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi, highlighting his growth both as a player and as a person: “He has always been a boy of great perspective; I think he has matured as a person, with great humility, even in positive moments like now. He continues to carry this desire to improve.”
Joining Gasperini in the press conference was Carnesecchi himself, who expressed his enthusiasm about the team’s current form: “I am going through a fantastic moment, but I believe it is due to the great performances of the team. My teammates are performing at their best.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining balance and pushing for improvement: “The Champions League has allowed me to take a mental step forward; it helps you understand certain matches and brings valuable experience.”
