In a recent press conference, Napoli manager Antonio Conte revealed that star winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has officially requested to leave the club. This confirmation comes amidst growing speculation about the Georgian player’s potential move to Paris Saint-Germain during the January transfer window.

Conte expressed his disappointment with the situation, stating, “Kvara has asked the club to be sold, without beating around the bush. I was informed of this, and the player confirmed this decision to me. Personally, I feel greatly disappointed: I spent six months working with him, making him feel at the center of the project.”

The manager further elaborated on the contract negotiations that had been ongoing, “The contract was supposed to be renewed, but after six months, we’re back to square one. It means that I wasn’t persuasive enough in convincing both parties to move forward together. I don’t want to force or chain anyone down. At this point, it’s a situation that the club and the player’s entourage need to resolve. The figures have been discussed, now we’ll have to see.”

Conte also touched upon the challenges of the January transfer window, describing it as a “terrible month” for the team. He mentioned that many players are unsettled, making it difficult to keep them focused. The manager expressed his eagerness for January to end, citing the problems created by the transfer market.

Regarding potential replacements for Kvaratskhelia, Conte remained focused on the immediate future, “It’s too fresh, like a bolt from the blue. I’m concentrating on Verona. What matters are not the sales or purchases, but the match. It’s 3 points, we need to put hay in the barn, it’s too important.”

The manager also provided updates on player availability for the upcoming match against Verona, noting that Buongiorno, Kvaratskhelia, and Olivera would be unavailable. He emphasized the importance of the match, calling for fan support and highlighting Verona’s recent form.
