Roma are looking to strengthen its squad with a focus on Argentine talent, as the club has reportedly made a €7 million offer to Racing Club for defender Marco Di Cesare. La Gazzetta dello Sport report how the 22-year-old centre-back has emerged as one of the standout players in the Argentine league, catching the attention of Roma’s management.
Di Cesare, who has Italian roots, is known for his solid performances in a three-man defense and played a key role in Racing’s recent success, including their Copa Sudamericana victory. Since joining Racing from Argentinos Juniors in January, he has made 31 appearances across various competitions. Although he faced a setback due to a hamstring injury, his abilities have not gone unnoticed, earning him a spot in Argentina’s under-23 national team under coach Javier Mascherano.
Racing Club has set a release clause of €13 million for Di Cesare, which is set to increase to €15 million in 2025. Despite this, Roma hopes to secure the player early by offering €7 million plus an additional €3 million in bonuses. This strategy aims to outpace interest from other clubs, including Inter Milan and Udinese, who are also monitoring the young defender.
Should Roma successfully acquire Di Cesare, they will have to decide whether to loan him back to Racing until June or bring him to Italy immediately. His playing style has drawn comparisons to that of Italian defender Leonardo Bonucci, although Di Cesare primarily plays on the right side of defense.
The young defender’s Italian passport adds another layer of intrigue, as he has been identified as a potential candidate for the Italian national team should Argentina not call him up soon. His name has also been endorsed by Nicolas Burdisso, a former defender with strong ties to Claudio Ranieri, hinting at a possible return for Burdisso to the capital.
