Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso addressed the media ahead of his team’s Champions League clash against Inter Milan tomorrow. In his press conference, Alonso expressed his respect for the Italian side, acknowledging their strength and competitive spirit. “Inter is one of the strongest teams in Europe,” he stated. “We hope to be ready. They are a winning team that plays very well. They have clear ideas and know what to do during the match, coached by a top manager. Two years ago, they reached the final, and we learn a lot by watching them.”
Alonso emphasized his team’s ambition as they aim to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League. “We want to qualify for the top eight; we have everything to achieve that,” he declared. His confidence stems from a remarkable record, having lost only three of their last 75 matches, a statistic he humorously noted, “Let’s not say it out loud.” This impressive form speaks volumes about the club and its players. “I think we have improved a lot, and we want to play to win. The Spanish coach also provided an update on Patrick Schick’s fitness, indicating that the forward is nearing his best form. “He feels better,” Alonso mentioned. “Tomorrow morning we will check if he is fit to start or come on during the game.”
A key player for Inter Milan will be Hakan Calhanoglu, a former Bayer Leverkusen player. Alonso acknowledged Calhanoglu’s impact on the game: “We don’t think about individuals, but he is certainly a player who has a great impact on the game. I remember when he played here; he was a number 10. His game has changed a lot over time. He is a key player for them, just as Kimmich is for Bayern Munich.”
When asked about his future coaching prospects in Italy, Alonso remained open-minded: “I don’t close any doors regarding the future. However, at this moment, my focus is entirely on Bayer Leverkusen.”
