Milan’s midfield shift prompts search for new talent

Start

AC Milan’s recent tactical adjustment, featuring Yunus Musah in a more defensive midfield role, has brought a new balance to Paulo Fonseca’s squad. This change, implemented before the Champions League victory in Madrid and reinforced against Empoli in Serie A, has highlighted the need for additional midfield reinforcements in the January transfer window.

Calciomercato report how the Rossoneri’s current midfield options include Fofana, Reijnders, Musah, Loftus-Cheek, and the soon-to-return Bennacer. However, with the team now favoring a formation with one defensive midfielder and two more advanced midfielders, the squad depth appears insufficient for sustained success.

Milan’s scouting team is actively exploring options to bolster their midfield. Among the targets is 20-year-old Reda Belahyane from Verona, who was recently scouted during a match in Cagliari. Belahyane is an attractive option due to his lower cost and eligibility for the under-22 list, which wouldn’t require additional squad cuts.

Other potential targets include Morten Frendrup from Genoa and Samuele Ricci from Torino, the latter also drawing interest from Manchester City. For more attacking midfield roles, Milan is considering Lucas Gourna-Douath from Salzburg and Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea, both 21 years old.

Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis, previously considered in the summer, remains an option but at a higher price point. Warren Bondo, the 21-year-old defensive midfielder from Monza who scored against Milan last season, is also on the radar.
