The Italian Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission has established a Special Committee to investigate the “Double Curva” inquiry, which began on September 30th with the arrests of ultras leaders from Inter and AC Milan fan groups. This development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing probe into potential mafia infiltration in Italian football.
Calciomercato detail how on Wednesday, Commission President Colosimo officially announced the formation of a new committee focused on ultras, titled “Mafia Infiltrations in Sporting Events and Links Between Organized Crime and Sports Clubs.”
Walter Verini of the Democratic Party will coordinate the Special Committee, which comprises eight other members from various political groups. The committee is expected to hold its first meeting next week to determine its course of action.
According to reports from Tuttosport, the committee will likely schedule a series of hearings in Rome or via video conference. Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta and AC Milan President Paolo Scaroni are expected to be among the first to be called for questioning. There’s also a possibility that Inter’s Corporate CEO Alessandro Antonello and AC Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani may be summoned.
Verini previously stated, “The Anti-Mafia Commission cannot replace the judiciary, but it can shine an additional light on the matter. Our task is to assist the appropriate bodies, demonstrating a line of correctness, legality, and cleanliness, showing that one is not alone, that there’s no need to be afraid. And that prevention is necessary.”
While the investigation will start with Milan, the Committee plans to expand its inquiries to other Serie A presidents, as well as top officials from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and Serie A League. Upon completion of its work, the Committee will produce a report to be presented to Parliament.
