Former Juventus and Italian national team defender Leonardo Bonucci, now part of Under-20 coach Bernardo Corradi’s staff, recently shared his thoughts on his new coaching experience and his future aspirations in an interview with Prime Video.
Bonucci, who recently retired from professional football, spoke candidly about his transition into coaching: “It has been a great experience. Certainly, at this moment, it was what I needed to understand if I have it, if that fire necessary to be a coach comes from within me. It’s been a good test, experienced with a bit of anxiety, I’m honest. When you throw yourself into something new, into the unknown, you never know what adventures and moments await you.”
Reflecting on the current state of defending in football, Bonucci expressed both appreciation and concern: “I appreciate the desire to keep the ball in play. Sometimes what convinces me a little less are defenders who don’t act like defenders. An attitude that in some ways has led to conceding goals a bit too easily.”
When asked about the current Juventus team, Bonucci highlighted the impact of Bremer’s injury: “Bremer’s injury is a significant loss. He’s a silent leader, he adds physicality, running, power… coverage over the 50 meters behind you. It’s a shame because today’s Juventus would have been different compared to what it would have been with Gleison.”
Looking to the future, Bonucci shared his ultimate ambition: “The dream is to become a winning coach, and winning a Champions League with Juve would be the perfect dream.”
The full interview will be available this evening during the pre-match coverage of Aston Villa vs. Juventus, broadcasting exclusively from 19:30, with kick-off at 21:00.
