“A spark from Koop could turn things around”: Marchisio on Juventus’ Champions League and Scudetto ambitions

Former Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio shared his thoughts on the club’s current situation and upcoming Champions League match against Aston Villa. Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Marchisio emphasized the importance of the match despite Juventus facing significant absences.

“We’ve had some memorable Champions League nights in England before. I’m thinking of the 2-2 comeback against Chelsea or the victories against Manchester City and Tottenham. Let’s hope for another great performance. With so many important absences, Juventus will need to show personality and the spirit they displayed in Leipzig,” Marchisio stated.

Addressing the absence of striker Dusan Vlahovic, Marchisio noted, “Vlahovic’s absence weighs heavily; he’s the only natural center-forward. I say this regardless of the 0-0 draw against Milan the other night.”

With Weston McKennie also sidelined, Marchisio expects Timothy Weah to lead the attack. “I expect Timothy as the striker, and I’m convinced his speed could be decisive on the counter-attack. Koopmeiners will also be important: he was bought to make a difference, and in these evenings, he needs to carry Juventus on his shoulders.”

Discussing Teun Koopmeiners’ performance so far, Marchisio said, “There are players who have an immediate impact and others who take more time. Koopmeiners has alternated between positive and less good performances. When he was absent due to injury, his importance in midfield became even clearer. The goal will come, and the Champions League, where there’s usually more space and open games, could be the right opportunity. I hope to bring him luck and see his first goal wearing the Juventus number 8. Just a spark is needed to turn things around completely.”

Marchisio also praised young talent Kenan Yildiz but cautioned against putting too much pressure on the 19-year-old. He compared Khephren Thuram to a mix of Matuidi and Rabiot, noting his potential for growth.

Regarding Juventus’ chances in the Serie A title race, Marchisio believes January will be crucial. “Juventus will need to take advantage of the transfer market to stay in contention with Inter, Napoli, and Atalanta, who currently have something extra,” he explained.

When asked about potential transfers, Marchisio suggested, “At least one defender and one striker are needed, regardless of Milik’s return. In January, we need to go for sure bets, experienced players already adaptable to the league: in defense, Skriniar seems like the ideal profile.”

Marchisio expressed confidence in Sporting Director Giuntoli’s ability to identify talent, stating, “I trust Giuntoli’s instincts, who has shown ideas and courage in recent years.”

On the subject of Nicolò Fagioli’s potential move to PSG, Marchisio was cautious. “It depends on Nicolò’s wishes and Juventus’ ability to raise funds to strengthen the defense and attack in January. Numerically, the midfield is the most abundant department, and Thiago Motta seems to have found a balance with Locatelli and Thuram. I’d be a bit sorry to see him go because I’ve known Fagioli since his youth days, and his bond with Juventus is very strong.”
