Tottenham Hotspur’s goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, has undergone surgery following a fractured ankle sustained during the team’s 4-0 victory over Manchester City. Despite the injury, Vicario impressively completed the entire match at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
The 28-year-old Italian required medical attention late in the first half but returned to the field limping after halftime. Remarkably, he managed to make three crucial saves in the second half. On Monday evening, Tottenham confirmed in a statement that Vicario had surgery for the fracture and would be evaluated by the club’s medical staff to determine his return to training.
Vicario, who joined Spurs from Empoli last summer, has been an ever-present figure in the Premier League, playing every minute of the previous season and all matches this season until now. With Vicario sidelined, veteran goalkeeper Fraser Forster is expected to step in as his replacement.
Addressing fans on Instagram from his hospital bed, Vicario expressed his disappointment at being unable to help the team for a while. “Sometimes football gives you its highs, and sometimes it challenges you in ways you don’t expect,” he wrote. “I played 60 minutes at the Etihad with a broken bone in my ankle, giving absolutely everything I had for the team. Unfortunately, there was no way around this one… I needed surgery.”
He thanked the medical staff for their support and assured fans that he would work hard to return stronger and fitter. “Thank you to the Spurs fans for all the love. See you soon on the pitch,” he concluded.
