Former coach Fabio Capello has shared his insights on the upcoming clash between Napoli and Roma, highlighting the challenges that Claudio Ranieri faces as he returns to Serie A. Capello notes in his interview with Gazzetta dello Sport that Antonio Conte will not be pleased to see Ranieri making his debut against Napoli. “Sir Claudio knows what to do and how to get his players to follow him,” Capello remarked.
Ranieri steps into a difficult situation, inheriting a Roma side with just 13 points, while Napoli leads the table with 26 points. Capello emphasizes the uphill battle for Roma, stating, “It will be a true feat for them to overturn the odds.” He believes that Conte will struggle to prepare for this match because “he won’t be able to rely on the Roma we have seen until now.”
In his press conference, Ranieri hinted at a shift in tactics for Roma, promising a more cautious approach. Capello explains, “Ranieri has indicated that he will implement a team that is more defensively minded, less focused on pressing, and more attentive to closing spaces.” He adds that this change could pose problems for Napoli, who have not been prolific in front of goal despite their top position.
Capello also discusses the psychological impact of a new manager’s arrival. “When a new coach comes in, there is always a reaction in the dressing room,” he said. He expects senior players like Pellegrini and Mancini to step up after facing criticism recently. “I expect these players to make a leap forward; they certainly have the quality to do better,” he noted.
Regarding Lukaku’s fitness, which is crucial for Napoli’s game plan, Capello stated, “Freshness and clarity are essential against tight defenses. I hope Lukaku’s issues resolve quickly.” He expressed confidence in Lukaku’s abilities despite mixed feelings among Napoli fans: “If I have him, I always want him on the pitch.”
As for Dybala, Capello highlighted his importance to Roma’s aspirations: “Dybala makes the difference. He has the ability to create significant plays and the personality to attempt them consistently.” However, he acknowledged concerns about Dybala’s physical condition: “A Roma aiming high cannot do without him; we hope he stays fit.”
Capello concluded by suggesting that playing away from home could relieve some pressure on Roma’s players during this challenging period. “The match against Napoli will be their first test under Ranieri,” he said. “It’s an opportunity where they can find their footing again.”
