France secured a 3-1 victory over Italy at San Siro, claiming the top spot in Group 2 of League A and advancing to the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals as a top seed. Following the match, France’s head coach Didier Deschamps shared his thoughts on the game and addressed some of the criticisms he’s faced.
Deschamps acknowledged the challenge of the match, stating, “We knew it was complicated. Italy was in good form, winning 3-1 here is a result that allows us to reclaim first place. I think it’s deserved because we did very good things. The first leg helped us not to make the same mistakes. Even if younger, this Italy has quality.”
The French coach highlighted the importance of set pieces in their victory, explaining, “It took a bit of everything. The arrangement with the three attackers was decisive in defending well and creating difficulties for Italy tactically, my team responded greatly. I made choices on set pieces by studying the positions. In the game, Italy proved to be a quality team. I changed many players. These matches were oxygen for France, they served this purpose. Tonight’s victory is a great moment for my boys.”
When asked about the criticism he’s faced, Deschamps responded with composure, “No one can make me lose my calm. We didn’t win the match against Israel, who then beat Belgium tonight. It’s always like this, even though France has been up there for quite a few years. Thanks to me? A little, but mostly thanks to the players. I’ve been coach for twelve years, of course there are people a bit tired of seeing my face or hearing me speak,” he added with a laugh.
Deschamps emphasized the importance of focusing on the team rather than external opinions, saying, “What’s outside doesn’t matter, what matters is what’s inside with my players. Now they’re younger and need a bit more guidance: they have the quality and we can work on this quality.”
