“An honour to be linked with a great club” – Roma’s Mario Hermoso opens door to Real Madrid

Start

Mario Hermoso, one of Roma’s experienced signings under former coach Daniele De Rossi, has been struggling to find his footing in the Italian capital. After two months since his arrival, the 29-year-old defender has started only once in Serie A, was sent off in the disastrous match against Fiorentina, and has mainly featured in European competitions. In a recent interview with Spanish newspaper As, Hermoso discussed his adaptation to Italian football and addressed rumors linking him with a return to Spain, specifically to Real Madrid.

Hermoso candidly spoke about the challenges of moving to a new country: “The most difficult thing is changing countries, changing habits, and being away from your family. I’m still living in a hotel and looking for a house where we can all be together. It’s certainly harder than what I’m experiencing with the team where, despite three coaching changes, there’s a good atmosphere. We haven’t managed to find consistency yet, but personally, I’ve adapted quickly.”

Reflecting on Roma’s tumultuous start to the season, Hermoso said, “It’s not simple. I wasn’t used to all these changes, but that’s football, and you have to accept it. I’m convinced that we’ll soon find consistency and turn things around.”

The conversation then shifted to transfer rumors, particularly those linking Hermoso with Real Madrid for the January transfer window. The defender responded, “I’ve read everything, some friends have sent me what’s been written. It’s always an honor when your name is associated with big clubs. I was part of Real Madrid’s youth academy, and I’ll always be grateful for the teachings they gave me. I’m 29, I’ve played in Spain for most of my career, and I like the football played in La Liga. I absolutely can’t close the doors to a return to my country.”

Hermoso’s openness to a potential move back to Spain comes despite having signed a contract with Roma until June 30, 2027, with a reported salary of 3.5 million euros net per season plus bonuses. His comments will undoubtedly fuel speculation about his future, especially given Real Madrid’s need for defensive reinforcements following Eder Militao’s serious injury.
